F/M COMMUNIVERSITY PRESENTS SYMPOSIUM IN OCTOBER
In October, F/M Communiversity will present the “Lincoln, Land & Liberty” Symposium sponsored by the North Dakota Humanities Council. John Helgeland, professor of the history of Christianity at NDSU, will discuss “Religion, the Civil War and Lincoln” at 7:30 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 2 in Christiansen Recital Hall on the campus of Concordia College. Dr. James McPherson, the George Henry Davis ’86 Professor of History Emeritus at Princeton University, will present “Tried by War: Abraham Lincoln as Commander and Chief,” at 7 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 16 at the Fargo Theatre.
One of the lesser-told stories of the Civil War is how religious views on both sides of the conflict served to extend and sharpen the violence. Both North and South regarded the war as a Holy War, but Abraham Lincoln, while caught in this conflict, was able to rise above it. Enjoy Helgeland’s discussion on religion in the war and learn more about Lincoln from McPherson, a native North Dakotan who won the Pulitzer Prize for his “Battle Cry of Freedom: The Civil War Era,” in 1989, and has written and edited many other books about the Civil War, Lincoln and abolition.
Both evenings are free and open to the public.
For more information about these courses and the rest of the fall courses starting in October, a full brochure can be accessed online at www.fmcommuniversity.org or call the F/M Communiversity office at (218) 299-3438.
